Can Casein Protein Cause Hair Loss?
Casein protein is actually a slow digesting protein that is derived from dairy products. It is also referred to as milk protein, particularly because the protein percentage in cow’s milk is made of 80 percent casein. Besides being a slow absorbing protein, casein is also a quality protein consisting of a high amount of amino acids.
Bodybuilders usually include casein protein shakes in their fitness plan to gain lean muscle mass and get a boost of energy, however some people have held casein protein responsible for their hair loss. Do these claims have any evidences to support them? Let’s find out.
Benefits of Casein Protein:
Since ages, bodybuilders and casual fitness fans have been using protein powder to add more energy to their workouts and help them achieve their goals. The benefits of casein protein are many and thus it finds a place in quality meal plans recommended for the athletes and bodybuilders.
Contrary to whey protein, a fast acting protein for situations when your body needs to quickly absorb nutrients, casein protein is a slow absorbing protein ideal for the post workouts.
Is It Responsible For Hair Loss?
Despite its various benefits, casein protein has often been blamed for being partly responsible for accelerating hair loss in those who consume it on a regular basis. A study has shown that consuming protein shakes leads to the fabrication of some chemicals in the body that are responsible for causing or worsening hair loss.
Jennifer Martinick, a renowned hair transplant surgeon who has spent years studying casein protein’s impact on the hair, says that these days young men are more conscious about their appearances. Most men in the age group 20 or 30-something go to the gym regularly to get a well toned body, and there are some who opt for Botox procedures to improve their physical appearance.
Young men wanting to build lean mass also opt to taking protein shakes to help them push their body beyond limits while working out and recover fast. However, they hardly realize that this might contribute to hair loss. Losing hair as a man ages is normal, however those who start getting bald patches or a receding hairline at an early age is possibly because of the diet they take.
Although there are no strong evidences to prove that casein protein causes hair loss, many experts believe that foods that contain casein and whey protein isolates may be partly responsible for their untimely hair loss.
How to Prevent Hair Loss?
Good news is that we can prevent hair loss caused by casein protein. If you feel that you have suddenly started losing more hair than normal, after putting yourself on a special diet that includes casein protein, stop taking protein shakes and consult a physician immediately.
If you discontinue the consumption of protein shakes, this should help restore back the hair you’ve lost. You can accelerate the hair growth process by eating a vitamin rich diet, drinking lots of water, eating fresh fruits and vegetables, massaging your scalp with hot oil, and using a mild herb-based shampoo. This may be true as long as you do not suffer from MPB, once you do healthy foods will not help, and you must turn to the hair loss treatments and get yourself a combo that fights DHT (blocking it), and stimulate growth. Often, consumption of proteins together with intense workout may increase Testosterone levels and hence DHT, which is the cause for MPB.
