Male & Female Pattern Baldness

Pattern baldness is the #1 reason of baldness. Also known as Androgenic Alopecia, this reason affects both men and women and is caused by a genetic predisposition to DHT (the hormone Dihydrotestosterone). When DHT levels to a level that triggers predisposition (each person react differently to different levels) , the hair follicles begin to shrivel and baldness occurs.

Still, men and women have different reaction to DHT, demonstrated in the below scales.

Male Pattern Baldness

The Norwood Scale shows the stages of Male Pattern Baldness.
The first signs of Male Pattern Baldness are a receding hairline and thinning hair around the crown area (stages II to III Vertex, stage I is the “before” stage). If left untreated, baldness spread, the hair follicles stop growing hair and the result is irreversible damage to the follicles. For some unknown reason the follicles at the side and back of the head are almost unaffected by DHT and this is the reason that hair does not shed in these areas.

Female Pattern Baldness

The Ludwig Scale shows the stages of Female Pattern Hair Loss.
Female Pattern Baldness commence with thinning hair across the central area of the scalp. This can be seen from stage 2 and on. Unlike men, most women tend to retain their hairline. Without proper treatment, the thinning area often grows through other areas in the scalp and also in the temples and above the ears. Some women may even experience baldness per below.

Other Baldness Types in Men & Women

While most men and women follow the above patterns and baldness levels, you may have seen men who develop a female pattern baldness (thinning hair, but full frontal hairline) and women with male pattern baldness (receding hairline). There are no mandatory stages of baldness, it may appear in many ways.

Women Suffer More Then Men

Baldness is a devastating condition for both men and women but is particularly painful for women, as full, shiny long hair is tied to the female’s identity. The good news are that women, and not only men, can find cure to their pattern baldness, starting from medications through natural hair loss cures and even hair transplant.

If you are suffering from male of female pattern baldness, do not waste any more time, take action and start with hair loss treatment.
